Yes, I like things done the right way. I am a stickler for rules and precision, and I strongly object when procedures aren’t followed. I don’t budge. I don’t compromise… or that’s what people think. They don’t know that my heart melts when anyone is hurting – whether a human or a furry friend.

The start of life has no fixed moment, does it? We can never remember the first moment of our life. Much like how we can never remember the exact beginning of a dream. What about the end of life? Do we ever know whether it really ends? And, maybe dreams never end too. What if they continue in parallel universes even after we wake up? Wait. Are we on to something here? Maybe the most exciting journeys have neither a beginning nor an ending!
This bestseller at Suta will take you on a journey unto itself that will show you the high points of draping a saree. Get ready to enter a world of magic with this gorgeous made-in-heaven mul saree!
The mul cotton is what we call ‘Made in Heaven’ at Suta. Known in West Bengal as mul mul, the fabric is what can be categorised as muslin cotton. It is believed that this fine method of weaving cotton can be traced back to even before the Indus valley civilisation. What makes this fabric special is the almost magical process of weaving it. Cotton fibres are separated and spun into strong threads. The lightest and the most delicate fibres are separated and are then spun into muslin thread. These are then woven into fabrics by skilled weavers. The history of muslin weaving is a beautiful chapter in the history of Indian textiles. The process of the yore was much more complex and involved many unique tools that look primitive but worked like magic. The upper jaw of a catfish was used to initially clean the cotton before spinning. To separate the lightest fibres, a Dhunkar (a bamboo bow) was used, which when strung in a distinctive way made the lighter fibres rise above the heavier ones. This process gave the title ‘woven air’ to the muslin fabric. Weavers famously wove on looms that were at ground level and operated the looms from pits dug in the ground. Even during the Mughal era, the muslin fabric was seen as a symbol of power for its finesse. History is full of anecdotes to prove the awe that the muslin fabric generated. Emperor Aurangzeb is said to have chided his daughter Zeb-un-Nisa for appearing naked in the court when in reality she had been wearing several layers of the muslin cloth! Such was the fabric’s delicateness. The almost invisible fabric had made an Arab traveller in the 10th century remark that the degree of fineness is such that a garment can be drawn through a ring of a middling size. During the British colonisation and even during the Mughal rule, the art of weaving muslin took a hit as weavers were treated poorly and drought hit many of the weaving centres. As a result, today, the process of weaving has seen a lot of change. Nevertheless, the essence of it hasn’t changed and the charm of the fabric still remains.

Ajoba wanted her to be raised close to nature. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, away from readymade routines. “Children sparkle in the lap of nature — amidst vales, rivulets and crickets,” he had shared in one of his letters. Named after his favourite Tagore character, Chitrangada, she felt pressured to become someone she was not. While daddy read Ajoba’s letter, she thought to herself, “I am not a warrior princess like Chitrangada. I am me.” But who’s she? For days and months, the question kept popping up. She had instructed her mind to keep it under wraps, in the corridors of confusion. But minds were never meant to be obedient.
At some point, after spending a teenage summer in Spandan — Ajoba’s two-room mud house in Sakurli, she had an answer. “She” is a voice. A voice that makes itself heard. A voice that stands its ground. She is the voice of courage. And for the first time in life, she felt a lot like herself; a lot like Chitrangada.
Find your voice in this handwoven blue and green Mashru saree. Made of the finest cotton and silk, this striking saree comes alive with subtle gold and silver zari detailing.
This saree has been handwoven by a master weaver in the Mashru tradition. The Mashru weave is said to have originated in West Asia, in the 19th Century. The fabric is woven with a silk weft and a fine cotton warp. It thus combines the ageless comfort of cotton and the timeless aesthetic of silk, elevated by the presence of gold and silver zari.

This their favourite day of the week – Reyhna and her sister were due to visit the most luminous and vibrant part of the city. As they neared the neighbourhood, the appetising aroma of freshly-baked bread wafted their way, with the cheery voices of hawkers urging them to quicken their step. The square was lit up with lamps of various shapes and sizes, creating a make-believe starlit canopy. As planned, they made a beeline for the fabrics section. Reyhna’s eyes lit up. For as far as she could see, swatches of fabric of every conceivable colour and finish were stacked in tall piles. This is where she was in her element. This is where she knew she belonged. This was her own Dazzle Province, a hidden gem where she truly came into her own.

It’s often said that what comes from this earth, returns to it. The words hit hard when her family hosted a wedding and she saw first-hand the amount of food that was thrown away. She decided that things had to change and the best way she could effect that change was to be a part of it. She began to educate herself about ways to reduce her environmental footprint. She became more responsible about the waste she was generating via her own lifestyle and even began to grow her own food. Composting, thrifting, recycling – she did it all. But nothing felt more therapeutic than using wastes from her kitchen to sustain life in soil. The same soil that nourished new life. She was glad to be a part of this beautiful cycle.
Rekindle your bonds with the earth, when you wear this heavenly saree made of mul cotton and embellished with zari.
Our ‘made in heaven’ mul cotton, is also known as mul mul in West Bengal. The fabric is buttery soft and has a delicate beauty. Its weave is very fine and this lends a very fluid texture to the fabric, which makes draping it a breeze. It truly is like a hug that wraps you in its love. The addition of zari adds a regal sheen to this saree, making it as beautiful as it is comfortable.
