Story 

Over the years, he had developed a bias against the word, balance. He had heard his mother use it too often; his sister started using it once she got married and now, it was his wife. “Do all women think they are professional jugglers?” “Yes, they do their day jobs and manage the home too, but don’t I rock the baby, buy groceries, wash the car and pay the bills?” He was almost thinking aloud. His mother heard him mumble and smiled. “But are you held accountable for the housework you do alongside work?” “Have you ever felt the need to justify your hours at home by being productive?” “Have you ever been in a fix about picking work over the household or personal time? A woman does that on a daily basis and in some cases, the cycle starts during their growing up years. Often, the balancing that we do is NOT a chosen skill, not a quality we want to brandish. Mostly, it is a yoke of societal conditioning,” she ended her sentence in a sigh.

He tried to consider his mother’s words closely. It’s difficult to instantly relate to something that has never been your experience. But in that moment, he knew a change had to be made. A change to break the cycle. A change to help his partner and daughter choose and rediscover their roles.
